Japan with a Baby: The Ultimate Family Travel Guide

Japan with a Baby: The Ultimate Family Travel Guide
If you’re considering a trip to Japan with your little ones, Japan is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the world and certainly one of our favorite. We took our baby and toddler on a three-week adventure in Japan when our second was just 2 months old, and it was an incredible experience. The culture, efficiency, and welcoming atmosphere make Japan an stress-free and enjoyable place to travel with kids. Oh, and the food. The food!!!
I will say though, for a Japan trip to be successful, Preparation is key. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about visiting Japan with a baby—from where to stay, how to get around, and must-know tips to make your trip smoother. Plus, I’m sharing my free Japan Travel Guide, which includes a detailed itinerary and hotel recommendations.
Why Japan is a Great Destination for Families with a baby?
Japan might not be the first destination that comes to mind for traveling with babies, but it is a game-changer for family travel. From the kindest locals who go out of their way to ensure you’re comfortable to breastfeeding nooks in every corner; Japan is a wonderful destination for families with babies.
Here’s why:
- Clean and Safe – Public spaces are well-maintained and hygienic.
- Efficient Public Transport – Bullet trains make long-distance travel easy.
- Kid-Friendly Culture – Family priority seating, nursing rooms, and helpful locals.
- Diverse Attractions – A mix of cultural landmarks, parks, and theme parks.
Best Time to Visit Japan with a Baby
When thinking of visiting Japan, I think weather isn’t so much of a problem (besides rainy season). The country is so nice, and so diverse in what you get to do and see, that any time of the year would be great. However, a few mistakes I made when visiting involved clothing choices. Japan is somewhat conservative when it comes to dressing, especially color wise.
That’s why I created this LIST of the outfits I put together for myself for this coming trip.
Timing your visit well can make a big difference in your experience though, so here it goes:
- March – April (Cherry Blossom Season) – Beautiful but crowded.
- May – June (Mild Weather) – Ideal for sightseeing with fewer crowds.
- September – November (Autumn Foliage) – Stunning scenery and comfortable temperatures.
- December – February (Winter Season) – Ideal for snow lovers.
We are returning at the end of March again this year, but to Hokkaido island instead, and I cannot wait to share more about that experience.
This is what I’m packing this time around.
How to Get Around Japan with Kids: Japan with a Baby: The Ultimate Family Travel Guide
- Trains & Bullet Trains (Shinkansen) – The best option for intercity travel. Consider a Japan Rail Pass.
- Local Buses – Convenient but not always stroller-friendly.
- Taxis – More expensive but useful for short trips with kids.
- Strollers & Carriers – A lightweight travel stroller and baby carrier are essential.
Pro Tip: Enable accessible mode on Google Maps to find stroller-friendly routes with elevators and lifts instead of stairs.
Where to Stay in Japan with a Baby: Ultimate Travel Guide
Finding family-friendly accommodations can make your trip more comfortable, but except a few hotels, most stays in Japan are pretty family friendly. Most hotels include toiletries, have at least one meal available to add to your reservation ( I highly recommend this) and I recommend you stay in at least one Ryokan.
Here are some recommendations but our guide has more details, and links.

Tips for Traveling in Japan with a Baby

- Diapers & Essentials – Available in stores like Don Quijote and 7-Eleven.

Family-Friendly Activities in Japan
As part of this Japan with a Baby: The Ultimate Family Travel Guide, I wanted to include some sightseeing and activities that may be interesting to do with a toddler and a baby but since this is very personal, I also included many more examples inside my guide.
Tokyo
- Tokyo Disneyland & DisneySea – Ideal for toddlers and young children. We did manage our expectations by sticking to ONE area. My daughter really wanted to go and she’s really into the little mermaid so we spent all day in the under the sea section of the park. I spent a large portion of time in the baby changing and nursing rooms because they were beautiful and had AC.
- Sumida Aquarium – Indoor, stroller-friendly attraction.
- Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden – Open green space for kids to play.
Kyoto & Osaka
We opted to stay in Kyoto and do day trips to the cities nearby as it seemed simpler to not have to unpack and repack one more time when there is so much close to Kyoto. I chose Kyoto out of preference, because it seemed it was “less city” but on our next trip, we will certainly stay in Osaka to test that out.
- Nara Deer Park – A fun experience where children can feed deer.
- Osaka Kids Plaza – Interactive indoor play center.
- Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) – A stroller-friendly cultural landmark.
Hakone & Mount Fuji Area
- Hakone Ropeway – Scenic aerial views of the region.
- Hot Springs (Onsen) – Some onsens are family-friendly; check before visiting.
- Pirate Ship Cruise on Lake Ashi – A fun experience for children.
