This is the question I got most before we left, and the one I want to answer honestly, because fear keeps so many families home. Is Peru safe for families? In our real experience, traveling here right now with two kids, yes, with the same common sense you would use traveling anywhere. Let me walk through the worries one by one.

Cities and crowds

In Lima, Cusco, and the tourist towns, we felt comfortable and welcomed. We stuck to the well known neighborhoods, kept an eye on our bags in busy markets, used registered taxis or arranged transport, and did not flash valuables. Peruvians were warm and kind to our girls everywhere we went. (See Lima with kids and Cusco with kids for neighborhood tips.)

The altitude (the real safety topic)

Honestly, altitude is the health factor I would focus on far more than crime. Cusco is high, and it deserves respect and planning. We went up slowly, rested, and hydrated, and our kids did great. Please read my Peru altitude guide for kids and talk to your pediatrician before you go.

Food and water

We drank bottled or filtered water, ate at busy places with high turnover, and were a little careful with raw foods early in the trip while tummies adjusted. With those basics, the food became one of the best parts of the whole trip. My girls love ceviche, so they were in heaven, and there is always rice, potatoes, and bread for simpler days.

The Amazon

The jungle is safe with the right operator and guides. We went with a family experienced company and followed their lead on everything. (Here is our Amazon with kids guide.)

The single best thing we did for safety

Two things, honestly. First, travel insurance. We never go anywhere without SafetyWing, which is built for families always on the move, and on a trip with altitude and remote regions it gave me real peace of mind. Please set up coverage before you fly.

Second, we let experts handle the route. Our whole trip was planned by Travec, which meant trusted transport, vetted lodges, and someone who knew the ground at every step. What I love is that all that safety and logistics never cost us the cultural connection. Our kids made a local friend their own age, and we met people instead of just passing through. Your family gets $200 off a Travec family group trip with code BRAVEFAMILY at traveltravec.com. Honest fine print: family group trips only, not combinable with other promos, entered at booking.

Is Peru safe for families? In our lived experience, with planning and common sense, yes, and it gave us one of the best trips of our lives. Do not let fear keep you home. Start with my full Peru with kids guide, see the route in our Peru family itinerary, and find all my guides here.
