What we actually saw

When we spent time in our village in the mountains of northern Italy, where Liguria meets Piedmont, homes were for sale at fifteen, twenty, thirty, forty, and fifty thousand euros, in every possible condition. A two bedroom house or apartment can start as low as around fifteen thousand, sometimes less if it needs real work. And all in, including a proper renovation, you are realistically looking at somewhere between fifty and one hundred thousand for a beautiful, fully finished home you can actually live in. Not a shell. A real, well done home, in a genuinely stunning setting.
I am not going to pretend to be a real estate expert or bury you in spreadsheets, because that is not my job and it is not the point. The point is that the dream is far more affordable than most families assume.
The one euro house trap
Here is the catch nobody puts in the headline. The cheapest homes need work, and the real danger is buying a one euro house and then discovering the renovation costs a fortune, because there is almost nobody local left to do the work. You end up importing builders from somewhere else and the numbers balloon. That is exactly the problem a living, functioning village solves. Ours still has its people, its trades, its rhythm. It is not a place you rebuild from zero.
Why it is so affordable

These prices are not a gimmick. They are what happens when a town slowly empties out. Families leave for the city, houses sit quiet, and the ones that remain go up for sale. The village is not dead. It just needs neighbors again. That is the whole reason we are doing this.

Come spend real, slow time in a village like this first, in the off season, when it is just daily life and not a summer crowd.
